Adding an IP camera for video surveillance
Didactum's smart infrastructure monitoring systems are continuously being developed. In addition to the option of connecting USB video cameras, you can also connect an IP camera to your Didactum monitoring system.
Technical Notes:
Please note that only the new generation of Didactum IT monitoring systems supports IP video surveillance cameras. The November 2020 firmware update is mandatory for IP camera support and can be requested free of charge from Didactum support.
Please ensure that the IP video camera you are using supports the JPEG/MJPEG video stream compression format. If you are using an IP camera on your networked IT monitoring system that was not purchased from us or our official distributors and dealers, we expressly request that you refrain from contacting us with support requests.
Adding one or more IP surveillance cameras
To add an IP video camera to your IT monitoring system, go to the “System Tree” menu in the web interface. Click the “+” icon at the top right, and a new window will open. Select the element “IP Camera.”
The following settings can be configured in the web interface of the Didactum IT monitoring system:
| Setting: | Description of the setting: |
|---|---|
| Name: | Name of the IP video camera in the Didactum IT monitoring device. |
| URL (IP address): | Enter the URL (IP address) of the IP video camera. Be sure to include http:// or https://. Example: https://xx.xx.xx.xx/axis-cgi/mjpg/video.cgi (without quotation marks). In general, the URL address of the video stream depends on the manufacturer and model. If you are unsure, please contact the manufacturer of your IP camera. |
| Username & Password | If required, enter the username and password for the video stream here. It is not permitted to use the username or password as a prefix in the URL (IP address) field! |
| Recommended FPS | Enter the frame rate for generating the video stream of the IP camera. |
| Proxy | If the IP camera is located in the internal network and external access is not allowed, you can use a proxy to access the video stream. Only one proxy camera is supported. |
| Preview | Video stream output from the camera. If the IP camera is located in another subnet, the image may not be available without a proxy. If no image is displayed, please verify that the camera hardware settings are correct. To test this, simply enter the URL of your IP camera into your browser’s address bar. |
| Proxy URL | If a proxy is used, this field displays the address for direct access to the video stream of the IP surveillance camera. |
Editor’s note: To permanently save your camera configuration in the Ethernet-based IT monitoring system, be sure to click the floppy disk icon (top right). If the proxy of your IP video surveillance camera is incorrectly configured, the server may crash. In such a case, the server will restart in safe mode. A corresponding message will appear in the log file.
Setting up the IP camera in the IT monitoring system
To view the video stream from your video surveillance cameras, go to the "Camera" menu in the web interface of your IT monitoring system. This menu was specifically designed for video surveillance.
You cannot adjust IP camera settings in the "Camera" menu. To change the IP camera settings, go to "System Tree" => IP Cameras.
Then simply select the desired video security camera. You can then adjust the settings with a mouse click.
