Instructions for the expansion unit for digital / potential-free fault detectors

The expansion unit for dry contacts significantly increases the total number of digital/potential-free contacts that can be monitored. This unit is available with 32 or 64 inputs for digital/potential-free contacts. It connects to IP-based monitoring devices equipped with a CAN interface.

As of September 2017, the 100, 500, 500-DC, 500 II, 500 II DC, and 300 series support this expansion for potential-free contacts. The 50 monitoring device is not equipped with a CAN bus interface and therefore does not support CAN units or CAN sensors.

Description of the connections of the expansion unit for digital / potential-free contacts

  1. 32 inputs for potential-free/digital contacts including Phoenix connectors
  2. Optional additional 32 fault signaling contacts
  3. Field for optional unit labeling
  4. LED indicator for unit operating status
  5. CAN 1 and CAN 2 connections including auto-identification function
  6. DIP switch with TR (Terminator) switch

The TR switch terminates the CAN Dry Contact expansion unit. The last CAN unit in the serial CAN bus chain should always be terminated.

Termination prevents potential interference on the CAN bus.

Important: The right DIP switch must be in the "Off" position. This is only required for firmware updates of the CAN unit. If the DIP switch is in the "On" position, the unit will not function correctly!

Installation of the CAN Dry Contact Unit

Connect the CAN 1 connector of the CAN unit to the included RJ12 patch cable. Connect the other end of the RJ12 cable to the CAN port of another CAN device or to the CAN bus port of your LAN-based IT monitoring device.

The total length of the CAN bus for the 100 III monitoring system must not exceed 205 meters. For the 300 / 500 / 500 DC / 500 II / 500 3 series monitoring systems, the CAN bus cable length can be up to 305 meters. The entire CAN bus may consist of a maximum of 8 CAN sensors and/or CAN units.

Please adjust the Terminator (TR) DIP switch. If the CAN unit is located at the end of the CAN cabling, the Terminator must be set to "ON". With the CAN unit switched off, use the tip of a ballpoint pen to move the left TR switch of the CAN unit to the lower position ("ON"). If individual CAN units and/or CAN sensors are located between the control unit and the last CAN unit, they must not be terminated. Otherwise, the CAN units will not function correctly!

Configuration of the potential-free contacts in the IT monitoring device

Log in to the Ethernet-based monitoring device using a web browser (Chrome / Firefox / Safari). Go to the "CAN Configuration" menu item. Then click on the "Config" selection box and confirm the CAN bus configuration. The scan will then start immediately.

Please note:

Depending on the total number of connected CAN sensors and/or CAN units, the scan performed by the TCP/IP-based Didactum emergency alarm system can take several seconds. Once the scan is complete, the successfully detected CAN units and CAN sensors are automatically displayed.

The CAN units detected by the Ethernet-based hazard and emergency alarm system can then be individually configured in the web interface under "System Tree."

Example of creating an email alert

Each IP-based monitoring device can report messages from connected digital/potential-free alarm devices in the form of email, SMS (via GSM modem or third-party gateway), and SNMP traps.

Actuator functions, such as rule-based relay switching for forwarding messages to control systems, are also supported by the Ethernet-based emergency alarm systems from Didactum. Under "Logical Scheme," you can define notifications and alarms in the form of relay switching, SNMP traps, email, or SMS notifications.

Notes:

Should the network-based IT monitoring device unexpectedly fail to automatically detect CAN devices, please check the CAN cabling and the termination (TR) of the individual CAN modules. As mentioned previously, the CAN unit located at the end of the CAN bus must be terminated (TR set to "ON") using a DIP switch.

CAN devices located between the IT monitoring system and the last CAN unit must not be terminated. Please check the status of the jumpers or DIP switches in these cases.

This CAN-Bus (Control Area Network) expansion unit was specially developed for the Didactum high-end monitoring systems. In line with the general trend of "convergence of home and building technology into IT," it allows you to monitor up to 64 potential-free contacts / dry contacts around the clock via network or internet. Alerts can be sent directly from the Didactum monitoring system to responsible technicians or the control center.

Installation of the dry contact expansion unit is simple. Thanks to CAN support in Didactum IP alarm systems, you can connect this unit to one of the two CAN bus ports. A 2-meter RJ12 patch cable is included. Generally, you can daisy-chain up to 8 of these units to each of the two CAN bus ports.
